Professional Biography Data Scientist, Aerospace Engineer
Hello, and thank you for checking in on my work!
I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in aerospace engineering with Professor Beverley McKeon at the Graduate Aerospace Labs (GALCIT) at Caltech. My research uses modern tools from computer science, data science, and applied mathematics to develop technologies that will allow researchers to better study complex fluid flows. With the ever-growing need for sustainable energy solutions, the persistent problem of oceanic pollution, and the rapid proliferation of UAVs in autonomous urban environments, my research may be beneficial in many aspects of modern engineering and science.
Prior to Caltech, I completed a BS and MS in mechanical engineering at the University of Wyoming where I studied helicopter and wind turbine aerodynamics with Professor Jonathan Naughton. In particular, my work focused on characterizing the unsteady aerodynamic behavior of systems with rotating blades. While at UW, I was also a heavyweight wrestler and a wrestling coach (Headlocks are somewhat therapeutic to me. They help me stay sane when technical material threatens to asphyxiate.).
Aside from my work as an aerospace engineer, my technical research interests include artificial intelligence and autonomy, dynamical systems theory, and networked systems. I am also interested in the ethics of technology with special consideration for establishing development frameworks that promote human flourishing over raw technological progress.

My Life Outside of Research
I am thankful to have interesting work that keeps me curious and gives me a forum to solve meaningful problems, but research does not encompass all of my time and effort. Here are some other aspects of my life which keep me busy.
- Learning: I love to spend my time learning about non-technical topics. I often spend time reading on theology, philosophy of science, history, and other similar topics. I also enjoy learning new programming languages and computer science tools and implementing them through personal projects with friends.
- Physical activity: Combat sports remain an important part of my life. I currently coach wrestling and train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Pasadena Fight Academy. Come by sometime and I’ll teach you how to throw a proper headlock! I also enjoy activities off the mat such as running, biking, hiking, and backpacking. I am thankful to live in such a beautiful state as California where it is relatively easy to be active and experience beautiful places in nature.
- Photography: One of the character traits that I inherited from my mother, who is an artist and graphic designer, is an appreciation for aesthetics and the creative process. My primary creative outlet (outside of research!) is through photography. In particular, I enjoy photographing natural and abstract scenes. See my photography page if you are interested!
- Trying new things: One of my favorite parts about living in the city—especially LA—is the diversity of experiences available. When we have the chance, my wife and I enjoy trying new restaurants around LA county, going to concerts and other performances, visiting new beaches and neighborhoods, and visiting local museums and galleries.
- Community: Some say that variety is the spice of life; I believe that it is, instead, community. My principal partner in all areas of life is my lovely wife, Jessica. Every adventure is enhanced by her presence. I am also thankful for all of my friends at Caltech, my local church Grace Pasadena, and from other aspects of life who come alongside me in my hobbies!
